Office de Tourisme Luz-Saint-Sauveur

At the summit of 2877 meters high, you will enjoy the spectacular panoramic view over the Pyrenean chain. For 130 years the Pic du Midi de Bigorre is a high altitude site accessible to scientists and technicians throughout the year and it is an important site for astronomical and meteorological observations. Since 2000 the general public has had access, transforming the peak into a tourist destination. Along with the astronomy museum there is a restaurant, bar, snack shop and souvenir shop. Access by cable car from the village La Mongie, at the feet of the famous Col du Tourmalet.

The purity of the Pyrenean nights no longer remains unverified, and it is henceforth protected thanks to the Pic du Midi International Dark Sky Reserve (IDSR), the largest and most beautiful in the world, approved in December 2013. The dark sky is thus valued as an exceptional site, something to be experienced fully during your stay. Through organized evenings for visitors, the Pic du Midi offers the possibility to experience immersion in the Milky Way and the nocturnal universe.

Hiking idea: Oncet lake (2254m)
This lake is nestled at the foot of the Pic du Midi, not far from the Col du Tourmalet. After an easy gradual climb from the small valley of Oncet, you come across a striking view of the Pic and its observatory. Herds of sheep and llamas will come and liven up your hike. Departure point : from the big curve on the road to the Tourmalet, 1km before the mountain pass.
