Mountain Passes and Mythical Ascents

Beginners or seasoned cyclist, Luz is your base camp for taking on the challenge of the “Giants of the Tour”!

The variety of climbs here means that you can cycle all year round – pitting yourself against mythical ascents and mountain passes made famous in the Tour de France: Col du Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden…

At your own pace, here at the gateway to the Pyrenees National Park, your efforts are rewarded with magnificent views such as the Gavarnie Cirque and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre.

You will also be seduced by the more secret “off the beaten track” routes such as Cirque de Troumouse, Cauterets-Pont d’Espagne or Aubisque-Soulor.

Luz Ardiden – host to an arrival stage of the Tour de France
The Tour de France has given the climb up to Luz Ardiden the reputation it deserves. It also highlighted the difficulty of this climb: more than 1,000 m gain in altitude over 13 km. Which, it must be said, represents a seriously difficult mountain stage finish and thus makes it mythical. It is for this reason that the Luz Ardiden climb has been classified as “hors Categorie” by the Tour de France. In total, the station has hosted a Tour de France stage finish 8 times since 1985. All you have to do is to time your ascent (Starting point at 700 m – Climb up to Luz Ardiden: 1,715 m – Total ascent 13km. Average slope gradient: 8%). The Tour de France has also passed through Luz 63 times! Located at the foot of the Tourmalet, it is the starting point for the climbs up to the Aubisque, Soulor and Hautacam.

Marmotte Granfondo Pyrénées

In 2019, more than 1,500 cyclists took part in one of the most prestigious stages of French cycling. Due to the health crisis, the next edition will take place in 2021

La Marmotte Granfondo Pyrénées
Since 2016, Luz has hosted the La Marmotte Granfondo Pyrenees, a must see event on the Pyrenean cycling calendar. During a race held amidst breath-taking landscapes, cycling enthusiasts have the joy of applauding young hopefuls and living legends like Laurent Jalabert and Miguel Indurain. This event with its recognized difficulties (168 km, 5,500m height gain, hors catégories climbs) is a real challenge for 2000 passionate cyclists who come from all over the world, to win their place of “Finisher”. Emotional moments and an incredible chance to meet some budding cyclists, who nowadays make this challenge an internationally renowned sporting event, just like its alpine big sister in Alpe d’Huez.
